The Clock Formats: Concept of Hours

An hour is a unit of time which equals one part of 24 hours of a day. And an hour is also equal to 60 minutes. One minute is equal to 60 seconds. There are 2 types of clock format used all over the world. They are:

12-hour Clock:

A 12 hour clock uses 1-12 numbers in the clock. Most of the hand watches and wall clocks do not include AM/PM in the clock but the modern clocks or digital clocks show AM/PM.

AM means ‘Anti Meridiem’ which usually means “before midday”, whereas PM means “Post Meridiem” which means “after noon”. By convection, AM starts at 12 in the night and PM starts at 12 in the middle of the day.

24-hour Clock:

The 24 hour clock uses the number 0-23. The clock starts with 0, resembling the start of the day at midnight and finishes the day or the 24 hours at midnight. 0 means 12 AM in a 12 hour clock.

This format is used mostly in the business areas to avoid ambiguity. However, this was started by the militaries and now around the world most of the corporate and business sectors use it.
