After Covid-19, “work from home” phrase became very popular; so popular that most of the companies have shifted to “remote work”; remote work means you can work from anywhere, you don’t have to go to the office. With that, doing jobs became easier. Jobs like UI/UX design, copywriting, SEO, video editing etc. became easier to get and anyone of any age can do it, from anywhere.
With so much information available on the internet, one can easily learn any skill. However there are some jobs that need experience, some don't. Copywriting is a type of job that doesn't need experience. In fact, there are plenty of online copywriting jobs from home with no experience required and thus makes it an ideal start for the beginners.
Yes, you know how to read and write (of course you know); then it's an easy half job for you. In this article I will be talking about copywriting, what it really is, what you need to become one and where to get jobs as a newbie fresher and also some hidden tips on getting jobs.
Copywriting, sounds like content writing, right? No, these two are totally different things. Content writing means, writing a piece of content by researching, analyzing, formatting, and doing other steps. It can include every industry. On the other hand, copywriting means writing a copy for a website, email or ads. You see different types of tag lines after landing a website, those are “copy”. You see different catchy email headings and are forced to read it automatically, those are “copy”. One of the best examples are:
You see, this simple, precise line easily gets your attention! You feel like getting the software and installing it. This is what copy is.
So far you learned what copywriting is. So, a copywriter writes copy for websites, email, product pages etc. What is the end goal? Generally copywriters take clients brief, learn about the audience's intentions. Then they write copies that always have an intent. That intent gives the users a reason, and then that reason converts into leads, leads to customers.
According to Glassdoor statistics, the average salary of a copywriter in the USA is around $86K/year where $10K - $19K/year is the additional pay that includes bonuses, commissions and profit sharing.
However, a USA based entry level copywriter is expected to earn about $55K/year and intern about $35,995/year.
In the UK, the intern earns typically £23,000/year and an entry-level copywriter earns around £24,257/year according to Prospects.
In Germany, the salary of an intern is about €20,000/year in 2025 according to leverageEdu. Entry-level copywriters also get around like that.
Is it possible for copywriters to make money with copywriting outside their 9-to-5?
Yes, it is possible. They can make more by doing freelance and side projects with more flexibility. Plus, one can make his personal brand, with it one can easily have a side project.
Like every other job, this also has 3 levels. These levels are based on experiences.
Those who are just starting out, are at this level. It usually takes 1-3 years to reach mid level. They have to write copy for different projects, write CTAs and ensure the best copies for the projects.
After 1-3 years of successful projects one can be called a mid-level copywriter. They will be responsible for developing persuasive contents for the marketing channel. He may have to lead a team, look at their work and also proofread those.
Senior level copywriter is directly connected to the clients, he is responsible for getting briefs, acting upon them and developing a plan. These then will be handed over to the team lead. So, he is responsible for clients growth and ensuring their brand consistency.
There are different types of copywriting. You can do any of the following according to your need.
Firstly, there are remote and in-house jobs. Remote means you can do office work from anywhere in the world, you can sit at home and join the office, do work via the internet. On the other hand you can go to the office, and do a job like everybody else.
However, there are some key points to remember. Usually the remote position is easy, but for a newbie, I recommend doing the in-house job, because for a fresher it is important to meet the team and have real time conversation. This way he will be able to learn easily.
There are some other types of copywriting as well. Part time means you have a fixed schedule and benefits, full time means you have a job, either remote or in-house and fixed work hours. On the other hand, freelance means you have flexibility over time and work.
If you want more flexible time then you can go for freelance work. If you are planning to work in an environment, then full time and if you are thinking of doing other work besides a copywriting job, then you can opt for part time.
Ever heard the phrase “You need experience to get a job and a job, to get experience”? Though somehow it is true, still most of the companies nowadays hire freshers with no experience and also encourage freshers to apply. It's easy to learn copywriting nowadays as there are many guides/tutorials available.
Here is the 5 simple steps you can get started with copywriting:
First and foremost step of learning any skill is to study it. For copywriting it is absolutely important that you read about it. Read books, hear podcasts, read blogs, attend seminars, events etc. The more you learn the better you understand about copywriting.
Most people watch a 30 minute video on Youtube and pretend that he had learned everything. However, only a 30 min video can’t make you a copywriter.
Now that you have read most of the blogs, read a whole lot of blogs, attended seminars, webinars, your next step is practicing. “Practice makes a man perfect”; practice by taking up a blog section, rewrite it according to your perspective. Keep in mind that you are not writing content, you are writing copy. Content is something that you read in a blog post (like this one), that guides you, tells you, describes you something. On the other hand, copy has an intent, it gives users a reason to stay, convert and become an ideal customer. It is also the reason why copywriters earn more.
Why write?
You have to understand that, you need a portfolio, so in order to have a portfolio, you need work. But as you are a beginner, you can't get clients. So you need demo projects. For demo projects you can’t just watch a video and say that you are capable of doing the work. So you need to practice.
Take any blog, rewrite it. May it be crappy, still you are doing it. Repeat, in a few days you will have a good knowledge.
It is better to connect with like-minded people because it will help you broaden your thoughts. And the most probable cause is if you encounter any problem, if you don't know any other copywriters, how will you fix those! So, connectivity is a must.
Where can you find those kinds of people? There are tons of facebook, reddit, discord groups, communities where you can join and share your thoughts.
After finding like minded people, your job is to showcase your work. Unless you pitch your work no one will notice you, no one will find you. If you are unsure what to post, you can try this challenge “100 Days Challenge”.
In it, you have to consistently post your works for 100 days, in this way people can see your work and also your dedication.
Some people try to learn something besides their full time job and feel that if you talk about it in the office, the manager will scold them. However, it’s not always true. Most of the time, managers like your effort and they praise it.
So you know what you have been doing? You were building a portfolio, that 100 days challenge is now your portfolio. You can host it anywhere for the clients to see it.
Most of the time people ask where to upload this? What design to choose? Do I need domain, hosting for it? An easy answer is you can go and upload it to Github or Google drive for free. Remember this, you’re not a designer, so you don’t need fancy designs, all you need is proof.
After these successful steps, it’s time to look for clients. You can look for clients on popular platforms like linkedin, job platforms like Indeed, Flexjobs, Glassdoor, Upwork etc.
You can share your works in facebook groups, instagram or any other social media platforms. Most people feel shy to share and that's why they don’t find any job.
Do You Need Experience to Get a Job as a Fresher or Not? No, you don’t need skills, experience to get a job. However, to get hired you need to have basic ideas, show keen interest in that specific field and also show dedication. You have to convince your hiring manager that though you don't have any skills, with proper training you can surely be valuable for the company.
Then why do companies hire freshers? Most of them see freshers potential, they value them. As freshers have eagerness to learn, they show interest and give fresh new perspectives. They can easily be trained. Some companies give students internship opportunities so that new graduates can have real life experience and proof of it. In the future that can help them get a job.
Where to Find Copywriting Jobs as a Student? If you have done some courses, done an internship and feel that you are ready to take on jobs, then you can try for jobs. Here, I will be showing how you can find copywriting jobs via the internet. If you are looking for an in house job, you can do this step through popular job websites based on your country.
Indeed is a great job finding platform. As it is always updating itself, here you can find lots of copywriter jobs. Some want entry level copywriters too.
Linkedin is another great platform. It is mainly focused on industry level communications. So, there are no chitchats. You can find job postings on copywriting and you can filter by your choice. Linkedin is used by over a billion persons so you can expect to see the latest job posts everyday.
Another source can be Upwork. Though it’s hard nowadays to find entry-level copywriter jobs there, still it can be a good place to search on. Upwork gets over 36 million traffic a month, so you can also expect the latest and frequent updates on jobs.
However, you can find jobs by niching down the keyword “copywriting”. Like “creative copywriting”, “freelance copywriting”, “email copywriting” etc. to find the exact ones. This way you may land on those jobs as they will have low competition.
Nowadays it is hard to find freelance jobs, clients or permanent jobs. Though there are lots of job finding websites, those are oversaturated. Most of the job posts have hundreds of applications, so the competition is higher there. One successful way to find jobs is to:
1. Search on Google, your related keyword. For example you are looking for entry level copywriting jobs, search “copywriting AI company”.
2. Some top company listings will be shown. Try to open some of the top ones in new tabs.
3. Go to the last section, the footer. Most of the companies have a “Career” page linked there.
4. Visit that page, you may find a job listing.
5. If you don't find any, then you can contact them via email.
6. Most of the time those companies reply. After that you talk to them
Finding copywriting jobs online is easy to find though even if you don't have any experience. You just need to know the channel. However, after reading this content you will be able to not only know where to start but also find jobs. As copywriting is a demanding job for its huge challenging role, you need to know the psychology of the human mind. Keep doing the work, you will improve.
Popular websites like Upwork, Glassdoor, Indeed, Linkedin are good choices but if you truly want to get jobs then you can find them in Facebook groups, Reddit and Discord groups.
Yes you can use ChatGPT to get ideas. But you can’t use its answers directly because it doesn’t understand human psychology. Only humans can understand another human.
Of course it's a good career. If you look at the job postings, you can see how much the juniors even make. Actually, it's a tough job because copies have intent and to make sure those intents are fulfilled, companies invest in copywriters.
This answer depends on client rate, work hour, project quantity etc; still an average copywriter makes around $50k to 6 figures in year.
